What is an Impact Vest?
An impact vest is a foam protection that absorbs shocks around the chest and back. It differs from a flotation vest by its main function: protect from impacts, not provide buoyancy.

In downwind, you can find yourself several kilometers from shore. An offshore jacket combines buoyancy, high visibility and a whistle to maximise your chances of being spotted in case of trouble.

Helmets: Head Protection for Foil
In wingfoil and kitefoil, the helmet protects from impacts with the mast, board or wing leading edge. It is not legally mandatory, but strongly recommended. A fall can happen at any time, even for experienced riders.

How to choose: the helmet should fit snugly (not too tight, not too loose), cover the forehead and the back of the skull, and stay in place during head movements.
Line Cutters: The Rider's Vital Gear
A line cutter lets you free yourself in seconds in an emergency. Lines wrapped around a limb, a release problem, a dangerous situation: a line cutter can get you out of a critical situation. It must be immediately accessible, attached to the harness.

Leashes: Stay Connected to Your Gear
The leash connects you to your board or wing. In a fall, you recover your equipment without swimming after it. On a foil, a short leash prevents the board from snapping back violently towards you.

Hearing Protection: Preventing Exostosis
Exostosis (surfer's ear) is a bony growth caused by repeated exposure to cold water and wind. It develops gradually and can reduce hearing. Once established, only surgery can treat it. Prevention is simple: wear suitable earplugs.

No, an impact vest is not legally mandatory in France. However, it is strongly recommended. In wingfoil, falls onto the mast or board can cause chest or rib trauma. Wing-specific vests (ION Rush, Forward WIP Lowpro) are designed with wide armholes so they do not restrict arm movement.
Is a helmet mandatory for foil?
No, a helmet is not legally mandatory for foil. However, we strongly recommend it for wingfoil and kitefoil. The mast and wings of the foil are rigid elements that can cause head injuries in a fall or collision. Even experienced riders can fall unexpectedly. Price range: 40-65€.
Which line cutter should I choose?
Choose a line cutter with a protected blade and a reliable harness attachment. The blade must be able to cut Dyneema lines easily. ION (23€) and Ride Engine (12€) offer compact, proven models. Tip: test it on an old line before you go out.
SurfEars or classic earplugs?
SurfEars have an acoustic membrane that lets sound through while blocking water. You can hear other riders, waves and warnings. Classic plugs block everything, which can be less safe. Price: EQ Earplug 39€, SurfEars 50-55€. For regular sessions, SurfEars are more practical despite the higher price.
Do you need an offshore jacket for downwind?
